Dear Senior Women,

The Women in Physical Education in New York State offer the Dorothea Deitz Memorial Scholarship to provide financial assistance to selected women students planning to major in the field of Physical Education. This scholarship is a memorial to Dorothea Deitz, an outstanding teacher, supervisor and director of physical education for many years in Schenectady and Long Island.

AWARD -- The 2010 DDMS scholarships will be grants to three deserving students in the amounts of $6500, $5500 and $4500. The scholarship(s) will be a grant for the Freshman year. Loans are available to scholarship winners after the Freshman year.

ELIGIBILITY -- Women students residing in New York State who are planning to major in the field of Physical Education are eligible.

BASIS OF AWARD -- The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of character, academic achievement, physical education competence, participation in athletics, qualities of leadership (including membership in Leaders' Clubs, Girls' Athletic Associations and similar organizations) and financial need.

APPLICATION -- Requests for application forms should be made through your Area DDMS chairperson (see below). Include the name and address of your High School in your request for an application. The completed application forms (see below) must be returned to your Area DDMS Scholarship Chairperson by March 1, 2010.  Allow a month to get the required information and references.

SELECTION -- In general, preference will be given to students planning to attend colleges in New York State. Initial screening will be done by area selection committees. Scholarships will be offered only to students entering an accredited major program in a four year institution. Final selection will be made by the State Selection Committee.

Applying for the Dorothea Deitz Memorial Scholarship

There are two ways of submitting an application to the Dorothea Deitz Memorial Scholarship. Once complete, the application should be submitted to your area chairperson. A list can be found here . The deadline for applications is March 1, 2010.

1. Download the full application form in PDF . Print the form out, then type the required information onto the form and submit it to your area chairperson.

2. Download the full application form in MS Word . The document is formatted as a form. When the individuals who are completing the form open the document, they should begin typing in the first box that is dark shaded. Then they may tab to each entry after that. After the applicant has completed the documents using Word please print them out and have the appropriate parties sign the printed copy. Return completed printed copies of the full ten pages of application together with original signatures. Do not return the application via e-mail. Send to your area chairperson .
