2005 - 2009 Leadership Institute Participants
In March 2005, NYS AHPERD brought together an eager group of professionals anxious to assume a leading role in promoting healthy schools in their districts. They came together as part of the Healthy Schools Leadership Institute (HSLI), a five year professional development program designed to develop the leadership skills of those responsible for coordinating school health programs. Each fellow selected completed a rigorous application process and was selected from a pool of applicants for their dedication and commitment to the school health program and healthy children. Accompanying these fellows were their school administrators who have agreed to work closely with the fellow to implement the New York Healthy Schools model in their districts.

The New York HSLI is modeled after the National School Health Coordinator Leadership Institute, a CDC funded project that was hosted by the American Cancer Society from 1999 - 2002. Program sessions are designed around the following outcomes: building organizational capacity for healthier schools; effectively advocating for healthier schools; using assessment strategies to evaluate the school environment; leading and motivating others responsible for school health; managing coordination of healthier schools; and soliciting resources for this initiative.
This isn’t the first time New York schools have been able to take part in an initiative of this kind. In 2001, NYS AHPERD and the Statewide Center for Healthy Schools selected 20 schools to participate in the first cohort of the HSLI. This initial group has attested to the impact the HSLI has had on their school environment and the health of their faculty/staff and students. The first HSLI cohort will be working closely with the new cohort to help them work towards some of the same outcomes. Congratulations to those schools chosen for this initiative!
