Membership Benefits

We are a professional organization committed to the quality and promotion of health education, physical education, recreation and dance programs throughout the State of New York. Our members are directors of health, physical education and athletics; health and physical education teachers; recreation and dance professionals; higher education professionals and future professionals.

We provide professional development opportunities through statewide and local zone conferences, as well as, virtual opportunities and our NYS AHPERD Learning Series. We also provide technical assistance related to regulations, recommendations, and resources.

NYS AHPERD offers an annual General Liability Insurance program that covers current members in their workplace and for job-related activities outside the workplace. Current members have a $1,000,000 general liability insurance policy, administered by Loomis & Lapann Inc.

NYS AHPERD serves as a voice for health and physical education professionals and advocates for health, physical education, recreation, and dance as essential components of every child's education. Through ongoing communication with the New York State Education Department and legislative representatives, the association works to strengthen these programs throughout New York State.

The NYS AHPERD Foundation, along with several Zones, offer annual grant opportunities exclusively to NYS AHPERD members. Grants are available to purchase equipment, expand curriclum offerings, and develop or broaden innovative programs for students.

NYS AHPERD is an approved provider of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) hours through NYSED. Educators can earn CTLE credit through a variety of NYS AHPERD professional learning opportunities, helping them meet the state's requirement of 100 hours every five years to maintain professional certification.

Mentorship in education is a powerful tool for growth and collaboration. Experienced educators provide guidance, share classroom strategies and offer support to assist new teachers build confidence or experienced teachers to take the next steps in their career. Members can be a mentor or request a mentor at any time.

Any person who met the criteria for professional membership and is now retired as defined by NYS Retirement System or its equivalent.

grant opportunities

NYS AHPERD offers our members a number of grant opportunities including Foundation Grants and Zone Grants. We also provide information and links to ongoing grant opportunities from other organizations.


The NYS AHPERD Foundation offers multiple $1K grants and one $5K impact grant annually. The purpose of the grants are to support:


  • Program development in the areas of health, physical education, recreation, or dance
  • Equipment purchase, and/or
  • Professional training for curriculum, instruction, and/or assessment which impacts student development.


Applications for the $5000 Impact Grant are due May 31st.


Applications for the $1000 grants are due July 15th.

Section Leadership Opportunities

NYS AHPERD's 15 areas of interest represent a wide range of disciplines, including health education, physical education, dance, aquatics, coaching, recreation, higher education, and more. Led by passionate volunteers, sections provide opportunities for members to connect with colleagues, share resources, exchange ideas, and support professional growth. Section leaders also play an important role in developing programming for the association's annual conference.
